I spoke with the mechanic who said to leave the fan blade off and to tighten the 4 remaining bolts to the counterweight and to drive it into him.

Followed his instructions with no problems gettting it to his garage, where they pulled it all apart, removed the 2 shired bolts and but it back together with a new fan.

I was lucky that when it came apart that it did not do any damage other than cracking a couple of the blades on the fan.
