In Westchester, NY, Cutco and other "door to door" sales companies recruit private school kids to do sales. The private school kids then sell to all their private school friends' parents. The students get some amusement out of doing the demonstration for their friends' parents (the amusement passes after a few sales) and the parents are then obligated to buy the knives from their friends' kids. Not a bad marketing strategy for the companies. My parents have a few Cutco knives from back when I was in high school.
