You probably just have some contaminants in the diaphragm.
This can happen while testing unclean areas around the engine.
This happened to me too, and I used a cigarette filter to filter the vacuum. I inserted the filter into the clear PVC tube that came with the unit, and then reduced down to the adapter.
I have not had a problem since. If you want, I can e-mail you a pic.
