Unhappy Mitty Vac problem

My mitty vac seems to have a leak down problem. I got it from Harbor Freight (its the metal one) less than a year ago and was wondering if anyone has opened one up or fixed one. I usually pump down to 15 or 20 hg which shouldn't strain its little innards too much?? I almost went through the hassle of pulling an unlock line out which woulda really been fun. Tracing a leak with a leaky mitty vac is not working

don't have a suggestion for fixing your mity-vac, but i do know harbor freight has a pretty liberal return/exchange policy...

There's a rebuild kit for the mity-vac, but I don't know whether Harbor Freight carries it.

I seem to recall there was a discussion about a year ago where somebody located the source of the leak and came up with a simple repair. Might be worth a quick search.

Harbor Freight is pretty darned good about customer service.

If they don't have the rebuild kit or won't replace the Mity-Vac,
Eastwood has the rebuild kit. Their part number 46004G. Costs about $15.00. www.eastwoodcompany.com.

Cheers,
Wes

You probably just have some contaminants in the diaphragm.
This can happen while testing unclean areas around the engine.
This happened to me too, and I used a cigarette filter to filter the vacuum. I inserted the filter into the clear PVC tube that came with the unit, and then reduced down to the adapter.
I have not had a problem since. If you want, I can e-mail you a pic.

Thanks, I like that. Actually I hosed it out (didn't, take it apart) with some LPS#1, checked it next morning and it wasn't leaking. I will always check before making major decisions about ripping something out tho... Have you taken them apart to clean the diaphragm before your filter was rigged up?

Wes.. that site will be good to have if Mr Mitty Vac wont come back to life. Thanks. NO... its not an "off color" site

I traced my leak to the actuator up under the passenger foot well. It drove me crazy looking for it cause it only leaks when the engine is running.
