You can connect the vacuum to whatever manifold vacuum source is most convenient - port at base of carb, power brake hose etc... Make sure it's full manifold vacuum and not restricted or regulated vacuum like the distributor advance.
You'll need some kind of an electric valve to switch vacuum. Maybe a search in your local salvage yard will turn up a suitable one, like those used on the emission systems on many early '70s Mercedes or BMW or the AC idle-up systems on many '70s, '80s Japanese cars. Power the switching valve off the AC compressor clutch power wire.
