Sorry, I missed your question. Yes the throttle plate is buried. I have never cleaned it and my car now has 267,000 miles and still looks pretty clean. You probably could just spray carb cleaner down there and get most of it off. After spraying, prop open the sensor plat for five or ten minutes to let the carb cleaner evaporate so that there is no liquid to be sucked into the engine.
