Cleaning M103 Throttle Body?

How do you clean the area around the throttle valve in the throttle body of the M103 engine if the air flow sensor plate is in the way? Do you have to remove the CIS-E mixture control unit?

TIA, Bud

There may be a better way that someone else can offer, but I simply push down the plate with one finger and spray with carburetor cleaner. Then I wipe everything as far down as I can with a clean shop towel. Using one finger you can even get underneath the throttle plate a little.

Sometimes this is necessary to keep it from getting sticky if it's really dirty.

Good luck,

Larry, I always clean around the sensor plate each time I change oil but I was thinking I should clean around the throttle plate which is below the sensor plate on the M103. I could spray something down there but I don't see how I could get that far down to wipe it up w/o removing the sensor plate.

Sorry, I missed your question. Yes the throttle plate is buried. I have never cleaned it and my car now has 267,000 miles and still looks pretty clean. You probably could just spray carb cleaner down there and get most of it off. After spraying, prop open the sensor plat for five or ten minutes to let the carb cleaner evaporate so that there is no liquid to be sucked into the engine.

Good luck,
