Thanks for the suggestion. I had used the search function, and had come up very little. Everyone kept saying there was a silver box in the passenger footwell, but mine was different. The other results said the connector for the system was round, but I didn't have such a beast.

I had found where the factory connector is for the diagnostic system next to the battery, and indeed there is a tiny button and an LED that flashed out a code. I was looking at it in the dark with only a flashlight previously and I didn't see the little button.

I held down the button for 2 seconds and the LED flashed 17 times. I then repeated the process and got the same code again. I cleared the system by holding down the button for 10 seconds. The check engine light is now off when I start the car, but I'm still curious what code 17 means.
