Need help with Check Engine Light

The check engine light came on in my 1992 190 2.6, and I'm trying to find out how to determine what is the cause. I have the repair CD, but I'm not finding it very helpful.

Is there a way to read codes from this system, and if so where would I find out what the codes mean.

Thanks,
Dean Rees

People here keep claiming that Autozone will read codes for you for free.
If you could get them read & post them here, we may be able to help interpret them for you, i.e. point you in the right direction.

Autozone can't check pre '96

The guy at Autozone said that they can generally read the codes from any OBD-II system, which would be any 1996 or newer model, but they don't have the equipment to test older systems.

What happened in my case was the car was (stupidly) run out of gas. The light came on then and has been on since. I'm taking a wild guess that the O2 sensor may have been damaged somehow, but do not know for sure.

The car runs and drives fine, but if there is a problem I want to fix it.

Thanks,
Dean

Before you go on a wild spending spree, try to find somebody that can read OBD I codes.
I believe there may be a way to do it yourself.
Do a search in this forum under DTC, troublecodes, OBD 1, retrieving codes, etc.
I am not familiar enough with M-B OBD I, to tell you.
Now if that was a Chevy, I could tell you how to talk to the computer with a paperclip.......really !

Tried search, but not much there

Manny,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had used the search function, and had come up very little. Everyone kept saying there was a silver box in the passenger footwell, but mine was different. The other results said the connector for the system was round, but I didn't have such a beast.

I had found where the factory connector is for the diagnostic system next to the battery, and indeed there is a tiny button and an LED that flashed out a code. I was looking at it in the dark with only a flashlight previously and I didn't see the little button.

I held down the button for 2 seconds and the LED flashed 17 times. I then repeated the process and got the same code again. I cleared the system by holding down the button for 10 seconds. The check engine light is now off when I start the car, but I'm still curious what code 17 means.

Just wait until some of the members here wake up or come out of hybernation.
Surely one of them will know what code 17 on a 1992, 190, 2.6 means.

P.S. You could also change the heading of this topic to something like; " What OIL to use ". That would bring you 200 responses in about 1 hour.
