You should be able to mic them to compare what is indicated versus the minimum which should be stamped on them somewhere. I suspect, without seeing them that they need to be replaced with that much lip though.

You should be able to get the wheel end of the 1/2 shaft out. Oh yea, you will need to remove the differential support to allow it to move up some more.
