My 560SEL driver's side door makes the same racket (But only when the temps are below ~2o degrees F)

Took some time find the culplrit. There's a host of threads out there in regards to the 126 issue. Some have used ski wax, others Lexol. Both short term solutions, your fabric remedy may do the trick.
