Mine didn't look quite like that and they were fastened on pretty good--I dont think they would come loose like that. Grab the metal peace that is sticking out and if you can rotate it and pull it in and out then it is a speedo cable.

also, when you put it back on the gear end, you can spin it with plyers and watch the gears move slowely. That way you know it is seated properly
