Check the climate control fuse. In fact, plan on replacing ALL the fuses! Use only ceramic ones, plastic bodied ones tend to "shrink" if the circuit pulls much juice and then fail. They corrode with age, and you get bad contact.
Check for vac at the red/gray line next to the brake booster under the hood. No vac will give you defrost vent only. However, a bad fuse will too, as the default no power setting is full heat out the defrost vents. I'm sure you would have noticed, though!
The pushbutton control unit is all electronic, cannot be fixed by resoldering like the older ones, sad to say.
You also need to verify that there is air moving into the small grille next to the come lamp. The suction should hold a 1 cm square of tissue paper up to the grille (climate control on). If not, you will have strange temp problems with no air flow past the cabin temp sensor. the little blower motor is behind the dash panel under the right outer air vent, remove the glove box to reach it.
If you have proper air temp control but it comes out the wrong vents, check for broken vac lines in the engine compartment. A MityVac hand pump will be very valuable here, go get one ($40 at the autoparts store). The climate control is supplied off the 5-way T at the front of the engine -- check the two branches to the right to see if they hod vac, if not, plug them.
Last, if you still have the trap oxidizer installed, take it to a dealer, it needs to be replaced (warrenty work, you will probaly get a new turbo, too). Trap oxidizer is a large aluminum sheet covered device on the rigth side of the engine -- if replaced you will have a heat blanked covered exhaust pipe running back to front (to the turbo) about 3" or so diameter -- the trap oxidizer is more like 10" dia. With the milage on yours, it amy still be there.
What color is the smoke? Blue? Black? White?
Could be a number of things: Blue is a bad turbo, Black is a fuel problem, white is a cracked head.
Engine should readily wide up to 4600 rpm, so something is wrong.
