1987 300 SDL, just got it PLEASE READ

Hi all,

first of all, thanks for clicking on my post!

I have just recently acquired a 1987 300 SDL with 96k miles, I am very very new to this car, but after reading all these posts, I am really loving this car!!!

I had a couple of issues, My car smokes everytime I acceleratre, sometimes when idling, specially if I slam the peddle just before shifting, it smokes quite a bit, I can see it in my mirror!

How can I check if the turbo is working or not???

My a/c never shuts off, even if I press the O button real hard, it stops bu comes back on, and the center vents blow very little air, the windshield vents blow alot of air and make my windshield foggy!

My RPM idles at 500, I never see the RPM go to high, I think its always below 2000.

ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Why would reading posts make you love the car?

Lots of causes. Check the archives. I'd start with a can or two of LubroMoly Diesel Purge. Then check chain stretch, IP timing, delivery valve seals, etc.

Actually, I'd start with a PPI even if in this case the first P stands for post.

> How can I check if the turbo is working or not???

If the car is enjoyable to drive, the turbo is working.

In my SDL, the onset of boost at around 2500 rpm is unmistakable.

Check the archives. I'd start with bad PBU. Might need resoldering, might need replacement.

You love a car that won't rev past 2000? Boy, you'll be nuts for DslBnz's (?) SDL that revs to 5300

500 is a little low. Pull the plug at the back side of the IP and see if the idle drops further or the engine stalls. If the engine stalls, the EDS is working. Try turning the knob near the left hood hinge to a different setting. Idle spec is something like 630 rpm. If the engine doesn't stall, the EDS isn't working. And you're car is proving once again that electronics failures will not strand an 86-87 SDL.

Check the climate control fuse. In fact, plan on replacing ALL the fuses! Use only ceramic ones, plastic bodied ones tend to "shrink" if the circuit pulls much juice and then fail. They corrode with age, and you get bad contact.

Check for vac at the red/gray line next to the brake booster under the hood. No vac will give you defrost vent only. However, a bad fuse will too, as the default no power setting is full heat out the defrost vents. I'm sure you would have noticed, though!

The pushbutton control unit is all electronic, cannot be fixed by resoldering like the older ones, sad to say.

You also need to verify that there is air moving into the small grille next to the come lamp. The suction should hold a 1 cm square of tissue paper up to the grille (climate control on). If not, you will have strange temp problems with no air flow past the cabin temp sensor. the little blower motor is behind the dash panel under the right outer air vent, remove the glove box to reach it.

If you have proper air temp control but it comes out the wrong vents, check for broken vac lines in the engine compartment. A MityVac hand pump will be very valuable here, go get one ($40 at the autoparts store). The climate control is supplied off the 5-way T at the front of the engine -- check the two branches to the right to see if they hod vac, if not, plug them.

Last, if you still have the trap oxidizer installed, take it to a dealer, it needs to be replaced (warrenty work, you will probaly get a new turbo, too). Trap oxidizer is a large aluminum sheet covered device on the rigth side of the engine -- if replaced you will have a heat blanked covered exhaust pipe running back to front (to the turbo) about 3" or so diameter -- the trap oxidizer is more like 10" dia. With the milage on yours, it amy still be there.

What color is the smoke? Blue? Black? White?

Could be a number of things: Blue is a bad turbo, Black is a fuel problem, white is a cracked head.

Engine should readily wide up to 4600 rpm, so something is wrong.

That's what I read but I had the SDL PBU resoldered/reflowed and the random relay clicking and blower speed hunting are gone.

A friend of mine has access to the production shop of a local electronics manufacturer. I wouldn't trust my own dexterity for something like that.
