The swap I did on the W124 (and plan to do on the other two MBs) consisted of a wooden knob fixed to a chromed steel shaft with a nut on the end of the shaft. Swapping out required removal of the console panel in order to gain access to the nut on the shaft...not quite a 15-second job!

But I don't own a C-class so maybe they are indeed that easy...

thats how the older cars were like. to install a new shift knob on those u would have to buy a shaft adapter.
