If due to pump failure, I unfortunately have no good advice for you. If you are doing it as a preventative maintenance measure, I may be able to save you a LOT of unnecessary work.
These 606 pumps seem to have an extraordinarily long life – I just changed my ORIGINAL pump at ~336,000 miles, and it was NOT leaking or grinding. I only changed it because I had the head off & figured that I might as well do it while everything was already apart.

I only got 164000 km or 102000miles on my car. Someday, I hope to break the 1/2 a millin mark!!!
BTW. My friends uncle back in Europe had a bimmer with almost 1 million km and BMW gave the guy a new bimmer!! BMW put his old one is some kinda of a museum
