This is from chatting with an experienced MB mechanic regarding pulling out the head bolt without damaging the thread. He said rather than using the hex bit, he would jam in a torx bit and use air gun to loosen the head bolt. Said he hav'nt stripped any thread yet.

I don't have first hand experience, just pass it on.
