I am speaking of my 1979 300SD. I first noticed this about a month ago. When I am sitting still and turn the wheel, there was a "pop" noise that came from under the hood it seemed. Now, it has gotten much worse. When driving down the road, if I hit the smallest bump, I hear a pop in the steering wheel itself. Also, I don;'t know if I'm just noticing this recently, but when driving, if I let go of the wheel, it slightly rocks back and forth. Is it suppose to do that? It isn't in real substantial amounts, and it stops if you hold onto the wheel. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to look for? I do have quite a bit of play at the wheel. Would the pop noise have anything to do witht the play, or could the pop be from some sort of steering coupler or steering box/both?
