popping noise coming from steering wheel...

I am speaking of my 1979 300SD. I first noticed this about a month ago. When I am sitting still and turn the wheel, there was a "pop" noise that came from under the hood it seemed. Now, it has gotten much worse. When driving down the road, if I hit the smallest bump, I hear a pop in the steering wheel itself. Also, I don;'t know if I'm just noticing this recently, but when driving, if I let go of the wheel, it slightly rocks back and forth. Is it suppose to do that? It isn't in real substantial amounts, and it stops if you hold onto the wheel. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to look for? I do have quite a bit of play at the wheel. Would the pop noise have anything to do witht the play, or could the pop be from some sort of steering coupler or steering box/both?
Thanks
David

This is safety, yours and everyone around you.
Please take it to an alignment shop for inspection.
Ask them to start by checking the Steering Cloumn Couplings.

Look for my recent post on my cars steering. I had a bad tie rod end that made a clunking noise. I would sudjest replacing both tie rods and the center link, and rebuild the idler arm. It will make your steering so much better!

Whole front-end was rebuilt within the past 6 months. It included tie-rods, b/joints, idler arm, etc. The whole bit.
Thanks

Listen to whunter it's the steering column couplings. They are kind of like miniature flex discs, and when they deteriorate you get metal to metal contact that makes that popping sound. My old 79 SD did the same thing when I bought it. If you keep on going like that, soon your steering wheel won't be connected to anything.

So it it the steering coupler that fastlane has listed for $120? Or maybe it was $114, as if that much of a different mattered. Would this get rid of much steering play? It is difficult to replace? How about alignment issues, or just aligning the steering wheel with the tires?
Thanks
David

Thumbs up Hmmm, answers

Hello David
FastLane
1979 Mercedes Benz 300SD
Part: Steering Coupling
Price: $132.80

Hmmm, failure to replace it will kill you and/or others....

It is a knuckle buster, but very simple.
This should get rid of most of your steering play.
This is one steering part where wheel alignment is not needed, unless the wheel being cocked bothers you.

take the advice given here please

Do inspect the steering coupler.. I get the same noise from my 1980 300sd w116. I just went through an entire front end rebuild, steering tie rods (entire assemblies), upper control arms, lower bushings, new shocks, new lower ball joints, etc., .. there isn't much that I didn't go through.. still had popping noise and sloppy steering...

Had my 6 year old sit in the seat and rock the steering wheel back and forth, I inspected from the top w/ flashlight and saw the 'almost failed' steering coupler. This is a very obvious fix (not so easy DIY so far).

good luck.. and just to restate, IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD NOT BE DRIVING THE CAR AT THIS POINT.. IT COULD GO AT ANY POINT AND YOU'D BE PRAYING FOR A LEFT DRIFT WHILE YOUR CAR GOES OFF THE ROAD TO THE RIGHT....

Yes, but there's real educational value gained from resurrecting these threads for folks that weren't around two years ago, like me.
