Listen to whunter it's the steering column couplings. They are kind of like miniature flex discs, and when they deteriorate you get metal to metal contact that makes that popping sound. My old 79 SD did the same thing when I bought it. If you keep on going like that, soon your steering wheel won't be connected to anything.
