It sounds like the problem might be with the vacuum actuator. Even though you have the door lock vacuum plugged, if the actuator is still connected to the lock, you can experience the situation that you described. You might try manually positioning the actuator rod from inside the trunk. If that is the problem, secure the rod in the unlocked position.
