Except for my ML (which has the stalk mounted headlight switch), my other two have the potentio-type switches and the markings on the dash panel surrounding the switch are backlit. You have to remove a dash panel to get to the bulb, and for years I thought my W124 switch wasn't illuminated until I probed around and found the that the bulb was indeed burnt.
