Don't know if this would be the same with the w124, but I went with smoked corners on my w201 after switching to euro headlights.

All the pictures I've seen with the clears, really stood out. They looked almost white.

I think the smoked corners match up better with my euros, as the glass seems to have almost a "tinted" look, so they blend well together.

As they say, your results may vary and opinions are like, well, you get the idea.
