I have had a problem once or twice (quite a while ago) with the speed generator on the back of the speedo. It plays a part in decel cut-off and idle control. The speedo is mechanical but the speed sensor on the back of the instrument converts it to an electronic signal. I only would consider this due to the symptoms you expressed.
