Between 1974 and 1984 cummulative inflation totalled a whopping 224%.

Between 1974 and 2004 inflation was 403%.

I don't know what it was for you guys, but when I first started having to pay for my own gas it was, at its cheapest, $0.79 at some ARCO's. This was 1986 and it was leaded. So... inflation between 1986 and 2004 is 173% so I should be paying $1.36 for leaded. We could be more charitable and say something like $0.90 for leaded which is probably more realistic since we're all using unleaded these days in which case we should be paying $1.53/gal.

Part of why we're all miffed is because nnflation has been real low the past few years. That's what makes it seem as though gas prices are going through the roof.
