Jack up each side of the front from the jack points of the car. With the wheel on check for play, move the wheel back and forth and up and down. Put your palm on the top part of the tire and the bottom part of the tire, apply pressure to the top and bottom alternatly, this will tell you if there is any play in the ball joint, left and right will tell you if any play in the steering linkage.
