Most cars have an over center spring which helps you push the pedal down once you get approximatly 1/2 way down. The over center spring is arranged so that it holds the pedal up if the pedal is half way up or higher and it hold the pedal down if it is 1/2 way down or lower. If your clutch has too much free play the the clutch could be fully engadeged and allow enought pedal travel to allow the pedal to get into the over center mode (where the return spring is trying to push the pedal down). This problem may simply be a free play adjustment.
