Just Happened-Stuck clutch pedal
Guys and gal, recently was driving my 1987 190e 2.3 5 speed maual benz and after changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear my cluth pedal sank and would'nt come back up even when i reahed down to to pull it up., i was really nervous, but after turning off the engine and pulling on pedal again,it now came back up and the pressure reurned.I started the car back up and was able to drive it home, on the way home it did it again and i did the same thing again in order to continue my journey home, im not sure what would cause this.
Your thoughts please? |

Most cars have an over center spring which helps you push the pedal down once you get approximatly 1/2 way down. The over center spring is arranged so that it holds the pedal up if the pedal is half way up or higher and it hold the pedal down if it is 1/2 way down or lower. If your clutch has too much free play the the clutch could be fully engadeged and allow enought pedal travel to allow the pedal to get into the over center mode (where the return spring is trying to push the pedal down). This problem may simply be a free play adjustment.

Do you know the history of brake/clutch fluid changes? How would you describe the color/condition of the fluid?
Unless the fluid is clean and you know it has had scrupulous maintenance in terms of fluid changes, chances are there is an internal hydraulic system problem with either the master of slave cylinder. Duke |

I change the oil on a regular basis, I don't know what the poblem is , do think its should be checked out , the master and slave cylynder, is it hard to diagnois.

Oil??? Do you mean you change the brake/clutch fluid regularly? (Brake fluid is not "oil".) Is the fluid clean looking?
Most of these older cars have probably had indifferent brake/clutch fluid changes over their life, so at this point the hydraulic components are probably living on borrowed time. A bad slave cylinder often is indicated by clutch drag or lack of release. I think the clutch pedal sticking to the floor symptom is more indicative of a bad master, but the slave is probably not far behind. Duke |

changed the engine oil.
The brake fluid was changed about 2 yrs a go. so ill have my mechanic look at the slave and master cylinder. right?

Definitely sounds like either the clutch slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder.
Have you looked at your brake fluid resevoir lately?

Hi Mr.Benz,
I agree with Chamorro. It is the brake master. Had the same problem with my 123 once. The pedal spring is not the problem. |
