Sounds like you have at least two problems, one electrical, and one in the cooling system.

If it is really a dead battery, it could be just an 'old' battery that died. It could also be an alternator/regulator/brushes problem that allowed it to die.

I presume you mean level in the expansion tank, not the radiator...
Work on the electrical problem first. Once that is solved, you can add fluid and find the cooling system leak.
