Joel, I have known labs that were very well-trained and were smart, but ours just doesn't seem to catch on to anything. As I alluded to, she was not worked with much as a very young dog, and I think by the time we got her the zest for learning was gone. I also think if we had more time to work with her she could be better trained. Our other dogs (a rat terrier mix and a deaf jack russell) both just seem to be quicker to pick up things and figure out when they aren't supposed to do something. Of course the deaf one only knows hand signals and has an uncanny knack for conveniently looking the other way when she is in trouble, but that is just being a jack russell.
