I don't have any software for the NIC. I found the reset button so I removed the NIC then reset it. After it reloaded I re-insertted the NIC and got the same message about the card being unrecognized. Is the wifi the NIC? I kept reading about wifi but didn't understand exactly what was being talked about.

The part number is:012938/d

That is the part number from the card. The iPAQ is a model 3975 with the 400 processor.
