Anyone here own an iPAQ?
I just got a Compaq iPAQ 3975 and it has all the accessories with it. However, I do not have the cd rom or the manual that should have come with it. I received it as a gift from my sister (she replaced it with a Blackberry I believe) as one of many going-away to college gifts.
Now for my question, I've done some research so I downloaded ActiveSync and it's synchronizing now as I type. How do I get it configured to use the internet on it? I have a wireless router (and booster) as well as the nic attached to the iPAQ. So, where do I go from here? Thanks David

One more thing, when I connect the network card (nic), it says "unrecognized card""Enter the name of the device driver for this card. For information, see the card manufacturer's docummentation." I obviously don't have the documentation.
The card is a Lucent Technologies Orinoco 11Mbit/s. It also says "SILVER" on it. Also, the card is for a laptop I believe or is at least compatible with one. Thanks David

For clarification, you have a Ipaq with a wireless "Silver" Orinoco NIC? Does it have an adapter that makes it PCMCIA compatible?

PCMCIA? I'm betting it does. It has one slot in the top of the device with a blue card in it then the expansion pack that I'm using now has the NIC in it. The other expansion pack I have has a slot that is about a 1/4" smaller than the NIC slot I'm using. So, I'll venture a guess and say yes.
Thanks David

I did a little digging and the unit we're talking about isn't PCMCIA. I was getting confused with the notebook and the Ipaq applications mentioned earlier.. PCMCIA is for notebooks and the like only (54mm wide). I presume we're talking about the SD card (Orinoco Silver) which is supposed to be (37.0mm wide). Does it have a part number?
Try uninstalling the software then remove the wifi card. Restart and or reset (if it can do that) the Ipaq and then install the software again and then plug in the wireless card? The order matters on my Casio (it's similar running CE) perhaps it might apply here. |

I don't have any software for the NIC. I found the reset button so I removed the NIC then reset it. After it reloaded I re-insertted the NIC and got the same message about the card being unrecognized. Is the wifi the NIC? I kept reading about wifi but didn't understand exactly what was being talked about.
The part number is:012938/d That is the part number from the card. The iPAQ is a model 3975 with the 400 processor. Thanks David

No matter what I type in te box for the device driver name it accepts it and just goes to the desktop. So, if I type in "bye" then push ok it goes to te desktop.
Thanks David

Hmm okay things are starting to make sense. A NIC can be either wired or wireless. In this case the "012938/d" is in fact a PCMCIA card only for a notebook like the one below.
http://www.zbestoffer.com/pages/General/IDetail.jsp?Item=392219 Okay, that orinoco silver PCMCIA card is entirely separate from the Ipaq so we'll leave that part out since it will not affect the function of the networking capabilities of the Ipaq. Is the network card that you speak of on the Ipaq a wired or wireless card and does that have a model number? It is an expansion card correct? |

The card I have is a wireless network card and goes into the expansion pack on the ipaq. I have the ipaq in its carriage right now so I can transfer files back and forth it that's what you're talking about networking. I cannot however get the ipaq to communicate using the wireless NIC.
I want to be able to use the ipaq to connect to the wireless router I have (which goes into a switch then another router upstairs). I'm not able to configure my orinoco to my ipaq. If I could get it configured I should then be able to check my email and surf the net using the ipaq, given of course that I'm in range of the wireless router. Thanks David

Okay, things are clear now. I apologize because I got confused until I found the cradle which accepts a full size PCMCIA card. I thought you had a SD or a CF sized WIFI card as mine does. Compaq got around that by making a cradle for the regular full size PCMCIA cards.
![]() Send me an email so I can try sending you some driver packages as I find them. ![]()

Email sent.
My computer is XP, as far as the PDA...I don't know how to find that out. It's a Microsoft build 4.0 or something like that? It doesn't say in the "about" program that lists memory, etc. Thanks David

Kuan, I think you are the only person to seriously complain about one. My sister said that this particular one was top of the line and from reading today on the internet, I only read good things.
Thanks David
