Question Biodiesel B-20 then back to Regular diesel

I've been running the B-20 from a station here in Athens, GA for a few tanks. I was running very low and decided to pull into the closest Chevron before I ran out. I definitely noticed more power and pick-up with regular diesel back in the tank. Anyone else experience this? Do you people normally run the Biodiesel all the time or do you go back to the original stuff every now and then?

B100 all the time. Except when below freezing, then it varies down to B50 around 10 below.

In my '99 I notice an approximate 10% loss in mpg when burning B99.

Performance is pretty much the same but the turbo seems to be on earlier, and longer, which probably explains the mpg's suffering.

D2 = 31mpg
B99 = 27/28mpg

I go back and forth all the time.

Cool btus

bio/uvo does not have the same heat btus as diesel fuel, hence less power.

I notice a power drop from straight petrol to a blend and a much more noticable drop to B99. I wouldn't say it's enough to stop me from using Bio however.

Bio

I believe that mathematically it's about 7% less power than dino.

Bio is more dense though, so similar amount of BTUs per tankful.

For me.. I just step on the pedal 10% more and so I'm ahead of the game.

Part of the problem is that biodieisel has a slower flame propagation rate, so the injection timing needs to be advanced a little. Or so I'm told. I have not touched mine. I'm not prepared to take that job on just yet.

I don't notice any difference running B100 in my '98 E300TD.

Have you changed your fuel filter? Biodiesel is an excellent solvent/detergent, and it may have washed up sludge from your tank and lines into the filter.

I drove three tankfuls of B100 through my car, then noticed it getting a little sluggish. I changed the fuel filter to a new one, and it's like a whole new car -- ready to run. For about $10, cheap performance improvement.

Cheers, John

I go back and forth as is convienient. Have probably run 20% bio tankfuls in last 100k miles.

If filters were an issue would not occur only when burning Bio.

Is a result of bio's lower cetane rating as compared to D2.

I've definitely noticed a power decrease, I need to get a tank of #2 just for the fun of it... But I can't even afford 5 gallons at the moment.. Need to remember to grab some injector line next time I hit the junkyard and advance my timing..

Don't expect much better while in college. When you get out, a few gallons of diesel is no big deal. Neither is a new car now and then.

I hear that First thing I plan to do with that money, is drop $15,000 into building a superturbo 617

You may plan that now, but I would lay good odds on your plans changing.

I believe that is incorrect. Bio has a high cetane rating. The BTU output isn't as high though.

I mispoke, bio's cetane rating is higher than d2's.

B99 still provides 10% less mpg's "in my car" than D2 does. Maybe I step on my peddle 20% harder to compensate......
