Howdy all.

A little late to this post but just for info,

- yes, 16" is the approximate length, not diameter, of the sock type filters sold by Greasel. I use similar filters with a metal ring sewn into the opening. Just hang one on a hook in edge of workbench, over a barrel to catch the filtered oil, put a container of dirty oil on the bench to gravity feed. Simple. I buy filters in bulk so they're only a few bucks each and last a long time.

- I resemble that "fuel geeks" comment. I find that most people just don't realize that a diesel will run various fuels and that SVO, WVO, and bio-diesel result in lower emissions than "good quality diesel". True, only some people are willing to make the effort, but eventually we'll figure out that we can grow our own fuel and not fight wars or destroy pristine wilderness just to get oil...

...Just finished installing new oil cooler lines (what fun) and topping off the veg oil tank. Gotta go hug a tree!

..fuel geek... I kinda like it...!

while you're supposed to pay road tax on fuel, if you use your biodiesel as a *fuel additive* there is no tax problem

I've run B20 (20% biodiesel) in my '99 E300 for 25K miles now with great results, as well as running 100% biodiesel (b100) in my tdi jetta for 15K miles. Good stuff, but be sure you're getting it from a good source and the water content isn't too high. Some of the samples we've seen analyzed had 600-800ppm of water

Cool

good point about water content, Lightman. I'm boiling some filtered WVO at the moment to get rid of the water. Haven't had any problem to date, but with the cold weather it's obvious that the oil has water in it. In warmer weather - I think- the water settles to the bottom of the barrel before I collect it. Anyway, I agree with your comment about "fuel additive" status.

Out to the garage to cook some fries and fill the tank!

I bought a water filter housing, 20 and 10 micron water filters, a 1/2hp utility pump, and some hose connectors. Let the oil settle for a week, poured off the good stuff, heated it a bit, pumped it through the filter and directly into my fuel tank. No problems. The setup cost about $100. For me the bigest problem was getting the smell of used french fry oil off of myself!

By the end of the summer I was back at the diesel pump, because it was just so much easier.

Good luck.......

Is there any good setup for unattended, gravity-fed filtering? I'm mainly interested in filtering my used oil. I'm hoping to just dump a few gallons in the top and let it take days (doesn't matter to me) to filter down to a container.

I think this type of setup would be extremely inexpensive as well as pretty effective. Might run the oil through twice with a higher density filter the second time.

Thanks much..

M,

I'm thinking along the same lines. I'm researching the possibility of pre filtering through the same filters restaurants use. They have a rectangular flat filter that comes in a box of 100 for $.27 a filter. I'm trying to locate a supplier in the Bay area. I live about 45 miles North of San Francisco next to the Napa valley wine country. It is nice country living here, but you have to order everything by telegraph and wait for the stage to come in. I'm going down to the city next week to go to a huge restaurant supply place and also to check on a company that sells filtration products for industry.

Hey,

Think one could use a large Brita water filter to filter used oil? They don't give much in the way of specs of the filtration.

Heating up the oil slightly would probably increase the speed of the flow, but I don't care if it takes a long time.

There's a 2 gallon model for $29.95. What do ya'all think?

PS: When I say oil, I mean motor oil. Could it also be used for WVO?

Hey Invisik,

I just gravity feed from a plastic 5 gallon container with a spigot on it. It just sits on the workbench with the spigot cracked open a bit to allow a small stream of oil out. Oil pours out into a sock type filter that I hang on a hook on edge of the workbench. I either catch the clean oil with a wide funnel (into another container) or just catch it in a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Everything but the filters salvaged from trash.

Filters - rated at 10 microns - are from a company called FSI (filter specialties, I think. Try FSI.com I think that's their address. I bought a box of filters for about $2.00 each. I've been able to filter anywhere from 25 to 50 gallons with each (used cooking oil) depending on the batch of oil.

Would post some pictures if someone could tell me how to reduce the size!

Fred

Tried all the .com combos and nothing works. Could you check on it for us?

Thanks,

Fred,

Just spoke to the lady that runs their West Coast warehouse. She'll ship to me. What stock # are you using? They have myriad filters.

Thanks,
Peter

Just open the pic by clicking on it. Let the default pic reader open. If you have windows this will be either "Paint" or Microsoft phot editor. If it opens in the microsoft viewer one of the selections below that is to open the pic in the photo software. Next hit "save as" then change it to a Jpeg instead of a Bmp. That changes the storage space of the pic. Not the size.

To change that open the pic again and then using the menu ontop find the one that gives that option. Later look into how to CROP the pic.

Im sure I confused you so just use the HELP feature of the program to clarify what I wrote.

Fred, Thanks for the FSI filters info!! I just got ahold of my local rep for them & they have some good prices! only problem is they only sell a min. of 50 filters, but that should be OK. There PENG-10 looks perfect for the veggie oil. they're sending me a sample of their 4" diameter, 15" long filter to see if it fits my filter housing, I made it for my own filters out of PVC parts. They're only $1.69 each!
Thanks Again!
