OK, you may have the tallest mountain on the East coast in total elevation, but out of all mountains in the East, Mt. Washington has the greatest prominence (vertical elevation) and holds the record for the strongest wind gusts in the world (@ 231 mph). So there,

Well, I only burn what's out of the pump. Or what I can trust brewed using my own methods. I wouldn't trust it any other way, since I care too greatly for my engines, and the surrounding componentry.

Well, take a look at the results of your last oil analysis and decide if you are comfortable running all those contaminates through you injection pump and injectors (or if you think you are sufficiently filtering them all out). If you think that's worth saving 6 gallons of fuel (about $20) per year, go for it.

Also, Mt Washington has the coolest skiing in the east. When I lived there, I did Tuckerman Ravine every spring (nice little hike; scary steep).

I'll run used motor oil* once diesel tops $15/gal... and only on this current engine that's already got 1.5 bum cylinders.

*re-refined motor oil would be fine as all the contaminates are in the residual, however I don't think this is within grasp of the home hobbyist. Did some rough math and you'd need to process (and use) about 2500 gallons or so of used motor oil/hydraulic fluids/machining fluids/etc. to make up the expense. (my math may be off a rather large touch... likely in the optimistic direction).

This seems like a good thread to ask this question.

I have a half gallon of new Charcoal Starter Fluid that I don't use anymore since I have gone to Propane. Is this OK to add to my MB diesels fuel tank?

The MSDS says it consists of Stoddards Solvent and Mineral Spirits.

If you have a full-or nearly full tank of diesel go ahead. The starter fluid will be so dillouted as to just raise your flash point a small bit.

Back in the 1970's a buddy had a VW diesel Rabbitt and his Dad worked at a small airport a VW diesel Jetta . When draining the private planes of fuel he would fill the VWs diesel tank and they even had a 50 gallon drum with aviation fuel in their garage at home. I do not think he EVER paid for fuel.

I was thinking along the same lines. these engines are not garbage disposals.

I wonder how many that are here now, will be here 5 to 7 yrs down the road?

As i read through this, the same old arguments as always.

Been running my bio for three years now in these rigs. Changed only some rubber lines and a few filters in 80k total miles. Paint thinner and rum? Not for my Benzes. Where did these people come from, Headinjuryville?

I've been using waste Turbine Fuel in my '94 S350D for over 3 years and 50k miles. I add Power Services Diesel Supplement at the max recommended per gallon and throw in a quart of Marvel Mystery oil once in awhile. I lose a couple mpg compared to diesel, but who cares, it's free!! I have changed delivery valve seals and injector return lines to viton. I also replaced all the other hoses in the engine bay, mostly due to age but to be on safe side as I used to run 7 - 800 mile commutes chasing helicopters. i also change fuel filters every other oil change. It's way better to change it in my hangar than on the side of some road at 3 am.
