Winterizing Biodiesel (Petro Too!)

Have taken to experimenting with winterizing additives for diesel in hopes of running BD all year long.

Test batches are as follows:

40ml BD, sterile sample jar.

Temp: -5 deg F.

First try, no additive:

Solid (wax) @10 deg.

2 - 400:1 dilution (1cc) Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement (hereafter: DFS) = Solid (wax) @10 deg

3 - 2cc DFS = Solid (wax) @10 deg

4 - 3cc DFS = Solid (wax) @10 deg

5 - 4cc DFS = Solid (wax) @10 deg

Changed test parameters, try Power Service Diesel Kleen (hereafter: DK).

1 - 2cc DK = Solid @10 deg

2 - 3cc DK = Solid @10 deg

3 - 4cc DK = Semi-Solid (gelled liquid) @10 deg

thin with gas?

Some folks on another forum have been experimenting with thinning bio-d and svo with gasoline and kerosene (parafin) for winter... will you do the honors and report back?
Thanks for the help- I've been preparing to do these things myself for the same reasons!

Test 6:

6 - 4cc DFS/1cc Acetone = Solid (wax) @10 deg

7 - 5cc DFS/1cc Acetone = Semi-solid (milkshake consistency) @10 deg

8 - 4cc DK/1cc Acetone = Semi-solid (milkshake consitency) @10 deg (no change noted with Acetone)

Changed test parameters.

Sample size: 20ml 100% BD, sterile sample jars.

New anti-gels in this test:

Kerosene (Kero)

"Diesel Fuel Anti-Gel" by Gunk (DFAG)

9 - 1/2cc Kero = Solid (wax) @10 deg

10 - 1/2cc DFAG = Solid (wax) @10 deg

11 - 2cc Kero = semi-solid (gelled liquid) @10 deg (noticeable phase separation)

12 - 2cc DFAG = Solid (wax) @10 deg

13 - 4cc Kero = PENDING

14 - 4cc DFAG = PENDING

homebrew?

are you using home-made biodiesel for these pics? The color is so orange, it looks very unlike the biodiesel I've had... Or are some of the additives adding the orange glow?

Very informative though; thanks for the experiments!

Fuel sample used: Commercial product, Blue Sun 100% Biodiesel. Largest Colorado producer, ASTM cert fuel.

Just had a lengthy conversation with a tech at Power Service, they say that NOTHING so far has been effective with BD (and they even sell a Biodiesel Anti-gel).

Problem they have is that additives like Arctic Express may indeed lower the pour point, but NOT the plug point of BD.

Also said that they found #2 diesel is more effective than #1 (Kero) at winterizing. They found that K1 elongated the crystals (instead of separating, they attach in a chain) and #2 does not exhibit that same characteristic.
