Radio...what the heck?

Today I decided to try to figure out why the CD player in the turboed 240D does not work. Fist I checked the fuse...burnt out. Changed that and it still does not work. Then I pulled the CD player out and...well...it appears that it was for aesthetic purposes only. The wiring harness was not plugged into it and the harness was not really wired in at all. The switched + and ground wires for the radio ran only to the cigar lighter and stopped there. Not too useful.

The front speakers seemed to be hooked up ok, but there were no wires for the rear speakers. I took a look at the rear shelf and there are no speakers, or holes for speakers there. Weird.

The only wires that seem to be behind the radio when I removed the useless CD player harness are the wires to the front speakers, a blue/black wire that seems to be the ground, and a constant + that somebody has spliced in to the ignition switch.

Did some 240Ds come with no rear speakers? Anybody have a link for a good '79 240D wiring diagram? Sorry for the rant.

After a bit more digging back there I found a plug that has a switched + and a ground. I still find the lack of rear speakers odd.

Thumbs up

I've seen a few Euro 126s without rear speakers. Both were 380s.

Strange. Must have been an option. One of my '79 240Ds has them, one does not.

My Euro 300D doesnt have them. Neither does my buddies Fed 240D. I dont even think there are holes in the rear deck on mine. Which is really odd. You would think the holes would be stock and the rear deck would be the solid piece.

Well I got it all hooked up and it was still busted.

$100 later I now have this one which works (and looks) much better.

I'll stick with the two front speakers for now

I'm trying to save my pennies for an air/water intercooler set up.

met a guy with a 300SD. had a sub mounted in the trunk, it was one of the buggest subs i have seen, he said that with the fuel tank between the trunk and the passenger compartment he had to have one that large... after seeing that i think i'll just keep my stock speakers til they die and then get them replaced... I do have a Pioneer CD deck in my car. but only after the tape deck died.

My '81 240D has speakers in the rear deck. Actually they are mounted in the board the carpet is on. There are no holes in the rear deck metal. I'm making a new board out of 1/4" melamine with the holes in it. (It's really fun to have access to a Laser.) The old board is warped and bent from 25 years of heat.
