Access to front speakers on 87 560SL

I have to replace the driver's side speaker on my 87 560SL. Could someone please post the step-by-step instructions for gaining access to the speaker?

Thanks very much!
Walt

I'll take a stab

I have an 83 380sl and just went through the same thing-here's what I found (but I can't vouch for if they all work this way).

On mine, the speaker covers had two small screws holding the bottom down and trim glue holding the top on. I know my speakers are not original so I can't vouch for the "factoryness" of this. Once you get the covers off, replacing the speaker is easy-you may have a hard time finding speakers that are an exact fit, but you can trim the excess meat off the speaker mounts and you will be fine.

I was a little surprised that the grilles mounted the way they did, so please don't take my word for it 100%.

Good luck..

thanks for the reply

Thanks for attempting to help. I was finally able to open the speakers. It turns out that there is a deeply recessed pair of nuts that hold the knee bolster on on the driver's side. Once you release these, the bolster drops away and the hidden screws to which you refer are exposed. Removing them allows one to pull the grilles down and off. There are two clips behind the grille that hold the top od the grille in place; they are a real bugger to replace, which is why yours may have had glue used.

In any case, it turn out that my speakers were OK, so I didn't have to go on a quest to locate new ones.

Thanks, again,
Walt
