subwoofer refoam

I have in my possesion a JL 12w3 in a ported box. It was given to me for free. I have been using it for a couple days and today I noticed the sound quality from it was crap. I looked at the cone and the foam had seperated from it.The foam is still all together.

Is this a simple job like just reglue it back or do I need to get a refoam kit? It sat in my friends climate controlled garage for maybe 3 years.

I did a refoam job a while ago on a 12" sub. It was not that hard, and it came out fine. Used a kit from Parts Express that supplied a new foam ring, special glue, plastic shim strips, and a new center cap. You have to cut the center cap to insert the shims around the voice coil so the cone stays centered with the foam removed. Then the foam is removed and replaced, and the new dust cap finishes it off after removing the centering shims. I don't know if there are any special considerations for your particular speaker, but I would recommend checking with the JL technical support dept for advice on parts to use-- maybe they have their own special kit.

Also, check youtube for instructional videos, there are probably some examples of speaker repair.

In your case, if the foam is not starting to dry up and fall apart, then regluing is a good first step. The glue that was in the kit was a white glue, and it said it was a specialized type, but you can probably find it separately by doing a little research. Check with local stereo shops for advice and see if they can supply the glue.

I'm curious about the sound quality issue...

...foam separation would affect sound quality a little but not much. It's job is to manage the excursion of the subwoofer, and you would "hear" problems with the lack of foam surround only at high volumes.

Seems to be the voice coil is fried.

no its the foam. Seriously the sub did not hit nearly as hard as it did before the foam decided to fail. So the sub is out of the car now

Hey, Joe, I got an Infinity Basslink sub from Amazon just before Christmas for $149.00. You might consider that route. It is normally about $300.00, if I remember correctly.
