Big question...please help
I went on Sounddomain.com to check fir for some speakers I want. The MB Quart DKD146 are 4x6's (which is not what is in my rear deck now) but sounddomain.com says that these would fit inside a MB 240D. Is there a certain way that these speakers would fit in? It says it takes no modification.

I wouldn't count on them fitting in the dash of a W123 without cutting anything.
I'd stick with 4" round speakers for the front dash. |

No way...
No way 4x6 will fit in your rear deck without cutting. There is only a 4.25in circular cut out back there. The biggest you can put back there with no modifications (other than new screw holes) are the Polk 5" rounds. 4" speakers are tough, too as they would be hard to screw down, although you could make a nice bracket that would accept the original grill in either case. As far as fronts go, and I know this doesn't apply to your question, 4" can fit with some trimming (two corners) and drilling new holes as long as the tweeters don't stick up at all, but the 3.5" fit very nicely with no grinding/drilling (same size as original). Bottom line is if you're looking for more bass, you won't get it from any of the four speakers unless you modify your rear deck. It's much easier and less destructive to get a sub. If all goes well, I'm planning on installing the Blaupunkt VSB-120 under a seat next week. It's no boom car powerhouse, but it will do what I want in filling out the sound. Next step up if you want to give away some trunk space would be an Infinity Basslink. Depends how much bass you're looking for...

Aloha-----Where did you find the vsb-120? How much are you paying? I think the clarion srv303 is the sub that subaru uses. I think it will fit too. If and when I purchase one of these I will post my results. Just another one to research. Don't know if its better or worse than the blaupunkt, just thought I'd share.

Your best bet for rear speakers is a 6.5" as the trim panel is made out of cardboard and can be easily modified to fit a larger speaker without cutting metal. I usually cut some metal below the speakers to allow the speakers to use the trunk for the enclosure and you can get some decent bass without a subwoofer.

My 123 has steel under the back deck, which is fiberboard, and it is cut to the same 4 1/4" circle. Cutting it would be a task indeed.

I am sorry, I was thinking of a different car and there is sme steel that needs to be removed. If you cut the cardboard first then you can use some angled tin snips to cut the metal. I use a tool called a nibbler and it works the best.

No apology necessary. In my short time visiting this forum there is little doubt as to your expertise regarding audio setups in these vehicles. My Blaupunkt sub is installed and really makes a huge difference. It's no neighborhood window rattler, but it fills out the low end very nicely. I purchased it from continentalimports.com (for post above). You can't see it or source the sound.
For others: If you are looking for big booming license plate rattling bass, this sub won't give it to you by any means. However, if you are looking for rounding out the sound of your basically stock setup with very little effort and modification, it works great.
