My friend has a 98 E320. The other day I noticed his antenna wasn't coming out so I told him. He said it has never come out! What's going on here? It appears to be a motorized antenna, but is it? If it is supposed to come out, why would it not be?

Make sure the antenna switch on the dash is in the up postion, otherwise it will stay in the trunk..

UHHHHH I think that it is for the phone only. The radio antenna is in the back glass or bumper. I can't remember which.

The radio antenna (I'm assuming that's what it is) is on the trunk. It appears to be a motorized one, but it doesn't come out... Any ideas?

I have a 1998 E320 and it does not have an external antenna on the car. Does the car have a factory installed cell phone? Maybe that is what the antenna is for.

No cell phone. It has to be for the antenna! Let me go check the year again... I may have told wrong.

Oh what the hell, push the antenna switch to the up position and see what happens. If nothing then you are going to have to find out where the actuator motor is losing or not getting power. BTW, make sure the radio is on when you are doing the pushing. Does it actually have a switch on the console that looks like it might have that function??

Don;t see an antenna switch... we're going to pull the trunk lining out on that side; is that where the motor is?

Was he listening to CDs when you notice it?? If YES, switch to Radio, and the antenna should come up....

1996+ MBs antenna does NOT extend when listening to CDs....Guess MB learns alot from Japanese....

Nope, radio. We took out the trunk lining and when we watched the motor, it doesn't even look like it's getting power, or it may just be a bad motor. The power is plugged into it, and we can't find a severed line anyplace, so... May just have to buy a new one.

Before you buy a new antenna, I'd suggest using a VOM plus the car's electrical manual (if you have it). I've been down this road (no pun intended) before and I've found wiring "jobs" done elsewhere in the car by a PO that eventually caused the antenna not to work - things like cutting into the wiring harness, splicing here and there, yuk! Better yet, apply 12 volts to the antenna (like from a power supply) and see what happens. You might save time and money and avoid having a second antenna you don't need.
