How good is a Maaco paint job? I am selling my '87 190E 2.3-16 and I was wondering if a paint job from Maaco would be decent enough to raise the value of the car (If the paint job is cheap enough). Has anybody ever got their car painted by them or seen a car painted by them?

I would say it depends on the guy working there at the time, and how good he is with masking tape. If he/she is not so good in either/or, then surely the sweetness of the price will end up leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. (and then you'll want to hit the laquer, er, liquor. hehehe)

Check out a car(s) coming out of the oven for quality, that would be the best advice that I can think of.

Not just ANY 4-banger; a "16V" 4-banger

Tom16V:

I think you'd be wise to stay away from those "discount" paint shops. Any decent paint job is going to start around $3,000, and go up from there. My personal opinion: anyone thinking of painting their vehicle ought to do it WAY BEFORE ever thinking of selling. This way you'll at least be able to enjoy the new paint job for awhile.

My 2-cents.

When talking to a prospective buyer of your car, you could always tell them the price reflects an x-dollar "credit" towards a new paint job. Or, advertise it at x-dollars over your minimum price and tell them, "How 'bout I drop the price x-dollars towards a paint job". That might be just what it takes to "seal-the-deal".

Just some thoughts in creative advertising

Brian

PS - Why are you selling the car?

Had an '86 nissan 200sx and had it re sprayed after a fender bender. I decided to do the whole car at Maaco. Bad mistake. They mixed the clear coat with the paint and everytime I tried to wax it my terry cloths turned the color of the paint. The finish itself like TXBILL said looked like a Krylon job. I think it was called the "ambassador finish" or something.
Like BRI says NO decent paint job should start under approxiamately $2500-3000 grand. If you estimate the price of the car to be aprox. the same as that, then you have a decision to make.
Just throwing in my 2 cents....
