Tough Time with Road Tar and Paint Spray

The Signal Red 1989 190E 2.6 I recently bought has road tar and yellow highway paint spray along the bottom panels of the vehicle. I tried Meguires cleaner wax but this stuff is dried on and must have been on the body for a while. Would someone please give me some advice on how to get this tough stuff off without damaging the finish. Thanks. This is my first time on the list. Look forward to visiting often.

Try using a clay bar on the tar and possibly the paint overspray as well. I know the clay bar works great on the tar, tree sap and other grit you can't see. It just lifts it off without scratching the paint.

Meguiars, Mothers, Zaino all sell clay bar and you'll need some type of lubricant to such as car wash soap. Give it a try, should help.

Cutting polish will remove the road paint spray with ease, no need to rub very hard.

Clay works well, any fine cut compound will work with a buffer machine.

I can also vouch for WD-40 on road tar and oil. Dissolves it right off.

My neighbor has a white Ford Crown Vic, and he ran over some green paint, and got it all over the lower part of one side of the vehicle.

It was quite stubborn and we ended up coloring sanding the green paint off with 1500 grit wet sand paper. Took it right off and restored his paint at the same time.

We followed up with 2000 grit, then fine cut compound, then polish, and hand rubbed Meguiar's Gold Class Liquid Paste Wax. Car looke show room new.

Don't be afraid to use wet sand paper. A regular application won't ruin your paint. If you're afraid, start with 2000 grit and keep it wet.

I found gasoline works the best. Put some on a tower and rub right off. Wash the car afterwards.
