For pre-cut, paint film protection kits (and nice headlight protectors as well) you may also check out Stongard at www.stongard.com

Installed 3M Scotchcal in Minnesota - turned out nice!

For my new 02 Beetle TDI, I was convinced by the local installer to let her use various widths of 3M Scotchcal (4, 8, 12, 18 inches) and custom cover the areas I wanted protectd. She indicated she no longer buys pre-cut Scotchcal kits for several reasons: The pre-cut kits are sized to stop just short of panel edges while she prefers to 'wrap' the Scotchcal around certain panel edges like the leading and side edges of a hood. Pre-cut designs require fussing a bit to fit and therefore look nice - i.e. they are prone to stretching out of shape.

The job she did cutting and trimming on site turned out very nice. I see occasional wavy lines where a pre-cut would not have that. It's a trade-off - quality edging of a pre-cut vs. the flexibility and customization of trim on site. I ended up going hog wild with the Scotchcal: front half of hood, leading edge of front bumbers, front and rear verticle bumber surfaces, front surfaces of the outside rear view mirrors, verticle driver door edge, front facing surface of rear fenders, door sills, inside window sills (they are painted plastic), front 10 inches of roof just behind top of windshield.

I learned from Susan she will only use 3M's Scotchcal material. I learned that the 3M Scotchcal material is actually coated with clear coat paint on the top surface. This explains why the material matches the surface finish and shine of the vehicle paint. It can also be waxed right along with the car. From 5 feet or more away from the vehicle, you cannot see the Scotchcal material - it blends right in.

One tip I stumbled across to help determine where to apply the Scotchcal was to take a walk down the row of used Beetles on the VW dealer lot. It is readily apparent what surfaces need to be protected.

The job was done by Susan, owner of Auto Images. She works on your site pending weather or out of her home base so to speak at B&K Auto Trim in Roseville, (mpls/st.paul) Minnesota.

I did order headlite and driving lite protectors from Stongard. I was a little surprised, when they arrived, at the thickness of the clear protective 'film'. By eye, they appear to be approx. 1/8 inch thick! I see why they are called 'stone' guard - because they will prevent stones from breaking the headlamp. I was just looking for protection from the sand blasting that the (polycarbonate) lenses endure. I may return the Stonguard units and have Susan put Scotchcal over my lights - that is all I need to protect against sandblasting.
