Harmonic Balancer -- which way to trun?
Hi All,
I'm working on my 83 300 D Turbo to replace the broken aluminum alternator bracket. In order to get to the bolt, I turned the harmonic balancer counter-clockwise to line the opening slot with the bolt. I've just heard from Jim on this list that turning the HB counter-clockwise on some V8 engine can cause problems. What about for W123? Thanks, Kerr |

Do not turn your engine backwards. Turn it clockwise as you are looking at the front.

Lets be sure we are talking " looking at which end of the engine "..
looking from the front you should only turn it clockwise... except for one time in the shop manual on some test where it is turned slightly backwards... but I won't mention that... If you turned it backwards.... I would turn it several revolutions by hand the correct direction.... using only the crank bolt.. not the power steering pump nut.... .. and check the timing of the valves by using the opening of number one intake valve... procedure is archives.... and lots of lazy people saying that using the cam notches is ok .. but it is not.. as Moderator Gilly was kind enough to support my position concerning this... also in the archives... This should tell you whether something messed up taking the chain and it's slack takers and such the wrong way ( which means that you are moving it without the benefit of the oil pressure part of the ratcheting chain tensioner working... |
