Bought this car for my manual transmission conversion.....

Hey.

I am buying this car for my manual transmission conversion. Since my 240D is an automatic and it has been stored in a garage all its life it is basically brand new looking. It will take me forever to find another one like mine. I found this car which will make a perfect donor car, I just have to drive it from Minnesota to New Jersey. I'm flying out there on November 7th. Deposit will be sent out tomorrow so I hope the deal does fall through.

Tell you a bit about the car. It has been owned by one person since new and he has all the maintenence records. The car does have rust from being in Minnesota. 168k on the car as well. It is also the same year as my car; 1983. I don't think I overpaid for this since I'm only buying it for 700 bucks.
Engine looks nice and clean as you can see for yourself.

Once I get this car I am only concerned with retrieving the tranny and all the components that I will be needing for this conversion, including the driveshaft.
I have never attempted such a feat but since I have all you wonderful gentlemen to help me through this forum, it should be a breeze.
Oh yeh, I made up my mind to go ahead with this so PLEASE PLEASE do not tell me that it's very hard, stupid, or time consuming to do this.

I will be parting the car as well so maybe I can make some of my money back on e-bay.

Hmmmmm...... if someone comes over and helps me I will give you the entire engine !!!

Here are some pics....

Any chance of doing the swap on the west side of the Rockies? I've got an engine bay with that 616's name written all over it

Seriously, good luck with everything! I'm still drooling over that engine, though... *sigh* why couldn't you be on the left coast?

Is it easier to swap out the whole engine with the tranny or just the tranny ?

It is a bit heavier, but I found it easy to swap engine & trans together. But then, I was swapping both engine and trans from one vehicle to another. I replaced an '82 OM617 with 380 000km with an '80 with 220 000km and decided that the lower kms on the trans justified swapping it into my wife's car at that time.

If its equal to or better than whats in it now go for it. fog the cylinder of the one you are removing with oil and save it for spare.

get motor oil in the motor without out it actually starting. will keep corrosion from stetting in with it sitting in garage.

But be causeful you don't put so much you hydolock the motor.

Thanks

Never did it but I have heard in the case of these cars its far easier to do it that way. I remember this being discussed by someone about a year ago.

I don't know about a 240D, but for the 5 cylinder it's much easier to pull the engine and tranny as a unit. The top bolts connecting the two are difficult to reach when the engine is in the car because the engine sits so close to the firewall and the bolt heads are shrouded.
