another ebay car

I saw a 300td on ebay and decided I would email the seller just to check how honest they might be.

The car has those replated chrome wheels and if you notice the gauges when the car is running the oil pressure sits awfully low. In the photo the car isn't warmed up and the oil gauge is sitting at the 1.5 bar.

The seller replies with "The chrome wheels are original as that was a factory option for that year. When fully warmed up, the oil pressure gauge sits exactly in the middle and then pegs when revved."

So, take a look and notice how cold the motor is and the oil reading. And the chrome wheels? Yeah, right. They'll peel in a year.

Item #4504440237.

Cheers,

Bill

The oil pressure is low, but maybe it's because it's filled with 10W30. :p

Gotta love the longevity claims to calm people's fears about 254,000 miles...

The Mercedes diesel W123 (1977-1985) chassis sedans, wagons, and coupes are known throughout the world as the most reliable, safest, and longest lasting vehicles on the planet. In fact it's a W123 diesel that currently holds the world record for the highest mileage for an all original passenger sedan. It's has close to 1.3 million actual miles and is currently being shown off at the Mercedes factory museum in Germany. In fact, there are several W123 chassis known to exist that have broken the 1 million mile mark. The 300TD Turbo-Diesel Wagon made its U.S. debut in 1981 and was the first diesel-powered passenger car to compete with gas powered cars for speed and power. It will easily exceed 100 MPH and can get 30 MPG at 75 MPH. Parts are readily available, reasonably priced, and last a whole lot longer than domestic car parts. Can't lose with a nice Mercedes diesel!

eBay car
I looked at one where the mechanic that had changed oil wrote, in magic marker under the hood stating 10w40 oil was put in the crankcase.

254k--ah, just a baby

Bill

I don't see any problem with 1.5 bars at that engine temperature. It is all related to what viscosity oil he is running. I own two of these a 300TD and a 300D 184 and 163K miles respectively both 85s and that oil pressure seems OK to me at least running Mobil 1 0-40. I would definitely start to get nervous at 1.0 Bar....but that is just me.

Maybe that is ok for 0W-40. My engine oil pressure, with 165K miles and 15W-40 is more like 2.1 bars at that temperature. I'm betting that engine is rather worn.

I remember running 20-50 dino and it was a big shock seeing the pressure difference running the 0-40 synthetic after I switched over.

sold???

The seller ended early because the item is no longer available.
Hmmmmm....I think I smell a rat again. Or is that dead fish?

My car at that temp runs at the 2.2 or 2.3 bar with rotella 5w40.

His just seemed low to me.

Cheers,

Bill

I think the car looked very clean, it appeared that the seller tried his best to describe and document the car and I wish I could have bid on it ! !

His feedback is good from buyers and sellers with at least two cars sold.

I really wish I could have bid on this one....

I like the chrome wheels....

Interior looked great! Sagging door handles, but no biggie there...

Man, I wish I coulda bid on this one.

I'm running some Castrol Syntec 5W-30 through mine to try to loosen up (I hope) my coked up rings-I am seeing 1.5 bar at idle-but only when fully warmed up-I would be concerned by oil pressure that low cold(possible oil dilution?). Amazing how the good deals always seem to end early when the desired amount isn't achieved-that should cause automatic bad feed back(just like a bid retraction would if you were a buyer). I need to list some of my old cr*p and stick it to some ebayers like everybody else does!

The chrome wheels anybody can have done for around $500 plus your wheels.
When he emailed he stated the wheels came stock from the factory with the chrome. Thats news to me.

Somebody tell me-right or wrong-did the chrome wheels come with the car or not? Or, are they aftermarket? I'm 99% sure aftermarket.

A year or so after your purchase, if the motor hadn't screwed up, those wheels would surely peel so don't get too excited over not being able to get this one IMHO.

Not that I don't like the look of the chrome, but there would nothing worse than to drive around with peeling wheels.

Cheers,

Bill

I love how they mention that taxi in the museum with 1.3 million miles on it, but they neglect to mention that it was rebuilt 3 times to get to that number, still not bad about 400,000 to a motor right?

If you guys actually read the report first hand the car had a total of slightly over 5 million kilometers (3,000,000+ US miles) and had 3 engine rebuilds. MB bought the car (used as a taxi) from the driver. He recieved a new MB for the car and a free trip to Germany. It is the world record holder for a chassis, and it has the same engine just rebuilt. The highest mileage car on the road last year was a Volvo with a little over 1.1 million miles on the car and unrebuilt engine. I have heard rumor that it has since had to have a rebuild on the engine, but don't know for sure. No I haven't tried to find out.
