Engine oil for a 4l V8 Diesel (OM628).

Hello Group,
Please tell me what is a recommended motor oil for this engine (other than Mobile1, if that is the only oil recommended by MB)?

As mentioned in a much earlier post, this engine is in 2002 ML 400CDI which is not driven much due to the fact that it is stored most of the time on another continent, so to speak.

Also, and since this is my first diesel ever, can someone tell me if it is inherent in all diesel engine, especially with such a new one like this, to produce a very thick, very black oil?! I am talking the consistency of molasses and the darkness of coal!!

As usual, thanks for your very valuable assistance.

Chevron Delo 400 or Mobil Delvac 1.

A drive around the block should turn the oil black in a diesel.

I don't think you can apply that to every diesel. The oil in my 03 duramax gets changed every 7500 miles and looks only slightly darker than the stuff I am dumping back in (amsoil synthetic). I would think the new MB motor should run relatively clean as well.

Kayooh, are you being literal about the "thick as molasses" comment or over-exagerating. It shouldn't be that cold down there to ever make your oil that thick.

Habanero,
Since that description is highly subjective I will stick to calling it "very, very thick oil"!
Actually, the only time I've seen such oil before in a gasoline engine, was in a very neglected engine which did not have an oil change in 10 or so years!

Since it is impossible for my truck to be even close to being that old, then I must assume it has to do with either an inherent design in a diesel engine or a flaw in the oil which is in the crankcase at the moment.

Could this be the result of a very, very dusty air intake? The air filter had caked dirt on it, so much so, it totally blocked the bright noon sun no matter how hard you flexed it.

The air filter housing itself had so much dirt and dried up leaves, I have no clue how the truck ever ran! Actually I am now worried about what could be inside the air intercooler!?
