I don't think you got it right. Read the post before yours....

Let me explain again.

Take out automatic transmission from 240D
Put in manual tranmission into that 240D
Put a 5 cyl turbo engine into that 240D

OK, in that case, you WILL need to have the 240 driveline cut down and re-balanced (best if done as an assy with the rear line.)

He has the driveshaft out of the manual shift 240D, will that work without cutting?

You may want to think about swapping the rear-end gears also. You will have about twice the power with the 300 turbo and it will pull higher gearing. Higher gearing will let it cruise at a lower rpm.

Don't know what all of this will do to your speedometer calibration.

I'm still wondering about all the climate control stuff. I have the round handles in the car while the 300D has buttons. I checked on the engine and the connections on both of the cars are different when it comes to the climate control.

kamil,
the drive shaft out of the 240 auto might be a workable lenth for a 300d manual. a 240d and auto tranny is comparable in lenth to a 300d and manual.
dont worry about it until the engine & tranny are in place. use the lowest numbered differenial you have. either a 240 or 300 manual flywheel will work. use brand new mb flywheel bolts. the three shift conectors will need to be shortened and retreaded.
the adapter plates are on all the newer engines are the same. dont worry about finding balance marks on the driveshaft/ clutch components.
you should cut out off the 300d the engine shock mounts and weld into the 240 body.
you will probably need the water pump housing off the 240d to run the 300d off the 240's cooling/heating setup. converting the heating system inside the car is a pita beyond belief.
use the 300d radiator and just ignore the tranny cooler fittings. switch out the speedometer.

if you arent going to use the a/c get rid of the whole thing. with the compressor and hoses gone it is way easier to work on the engine. take the phillips screws out of the solinoid and replace with hex bolts. it makes reassembly easier if you retap all threads and use anti seizure compound.

this conversion is almost a drop in job. i spent way more time cleaning my engine and tranny than putting it in.

Ohhhh..., so your 240 has manual controls and the 300 has the ACC system. No sweat, just keep the manual parts and hook up the hoses to the manual valve at the firewall. When you get to that point, let us know and I'll walk you through that. Cake.

No going the other way (TO auto control FROM the manual), well, you'd be crazy to do that anyway.

Hey fellow Californian, would you consider helping do another for cash?
I would love to go stick, I fear my tranny might go (wicked hard shifts, can't figure it out), and I will have the AC completely gone.....
just wondering....

Ok, I've kind of given up on my 240d engine, it seems to run ok but I get insane blowby and it smokes like there's no tomorrow.

I've found a guy that will sell a running/driving 300 turbo 123 style (not sure on the year cause my friend lives by the guy and asked him about it) that has 271k for 800 bucks. The body is pretty rough. I wanted to swap the 5banger turbo into my car. With both cars, I would essentially have everything I'd need to do this swap correct? I know people always say "if you're asking these questions you shouldn't be doing it" and yeah probably I shouldn't but summers coming up and I want to cruise in style and with an extra cylinder, a turbo and the gears out of the 300 I should be able to have some nice road trips. I've done some pretty simple engine swaps, and from what you guys are saying this isn't a very complicated one. Anyway, I'm searching and came up on this old topic, and just wanted to know what major hang ups people run into. I'm more wondering if you think 800ish bucks is a good deal for what I've been told is a car that runs and drives well, and if I could make some back selling random parts off the car? Thanks.

IF the engine is in good condition, then you have a good deal, IMHO. That particular setup is exactly what I have, a turbo engine in a 240D, very nice and easy conversion.
