Alignment problem? Or something else?
Here's my latest car quandry: A week ago I took it to have new tires placed on my 300D. The car was performing just fine before that. It came out of the GoodYear shop and, low and behold, I noticed later that day that it was pulling to the right something fierce. On dad's advice I drove it for the rest of the week to get through a job interview, and then was out of town (without the car) for a couple days, so the car still pulls. It's livable, but annoying because in order to go straight, the steering wheel has to tip off to the left. Also, I noticed when I turn the wheel tightly to the left, I can hear this awful creaking/cracking sound eminate from within the left wheelwell. Tension on the wheel is fine, response is great.
On consulting with my dad, he seems to think it may have had an alignment problem before the new tires, but it wasn't noticable with the old, hard tires. My take is that the idiots at GoodYear probably did something wrong. Which of these scenarios sounds more likely? If I have to take it back to the GoodYear place, I want to be armed with at least a little knowledge of the situation, so any input would be appreciated. I look forward to the days when I understand my car enough that I won't become frazzled and confused when little things go wrong! I'm working on it ...

Have you checked to make sure that you don't have a stuck brake caliper?

Bodhi,
When something happens to your car immeduately after any repair or part replacement is made, its usually caused by the repair or repaced parts. So I would suspect the pulling to the right has something to do with the tires. I would reverse the 2 front tires and see if it pulls to the left. If it pulls to the left after reversing the front tires, I would suggest you return to GoodYear. P E H |

I skipped GoodYear and took it to an alignment place my mechanic uses. It turned out the cracking sound was from a worn wheel stop, which was aleviated with a little grease. Alignment was quite a bit off, as suspected, so I had them fix that. I was much more impressed with these guys than I have been with the GoodYear ... they seemed to know what they were doing and CARE what they were doing, which gives me a little more peace of mind than I had with the other guys!
